Our first 5K

I am running my first 5K today… I’m thinking I’ll be doing intervals more or less.

This past Thursday my Mother-in-Law announced that there was a Weight Watchers 5K walk/run coming up on Sunday that she was going to do. Yesterday we found out that she wanted all of us to show up and support her by participating in the walk/run.

It turns out, I’ll be running (out of breath and miserable) my very first 5K without really knowing what the heck I am doing. YAY! note the sarcasm!!

The reason why I’m running it is because the husband stated that there was no way he would do it if I didn’t at least try to run it. And I didn’t want my MIL to be disappointed that her son didn’t show up. So, we’re running.

If I survive the day, I’ll update you on how it went.

Smile

Wish me luck!

Great Friends and Running

Remember when I talked about how great Couch to 5K was? Well, then I talked about how I’m still waiting for the runner’s high… and then I mentioned that I hate running and quit.

Well, today when the Mister came home and saw me sitting around on the couch, he decided that it was time to get me outside and running again. Despite my protesting and putting it off, despite the excuses of I don’t have clean workout clothes, and despite my grouchy “I am going to die” attitude he got my butt off the couch and into the street.

Let me tell you, I wanted to kill him. I also wanted to cry, and maybe throw another tamper tantrum with stomping feet and all. However, I didn’t… well I might have told my ah-mazing husband that I hate him (sorry babe, I really do love you). ALSO, I’d like to point out that I am obviously very alive and able to write this post. In addition, now I remember why I wanted to start running again, and like it… I love the way I feel afterwards, when all the sweat has been washed off, when I can finally breath and my heart isn’t threatening to escape from my chest.

So here is to me getting back on the old path and trying to convince myself that I love to run. Wish me luck guys.

On the brighter note. My Monday was super special because I got to catch up with a friend that I hadn’t see in four years!!!

Our middle school graduation photo… well part of it, both of us are on this side

Let me tell you a little about my friend Dita! She was my first real friend when I moved to the States, and at in the 4th grade when I barely spoke English… actually I think I knew about 10 words, she befriended me and showed me around. As the years went by, she became a part of my family to the point that we referred to each other’s parents as Mom and Dad.

Dita and I graduated from elementary, middle and high school together, we also lived a short walk apart, and when I started to drive I would pick her up on my way to school every morning because she wasn’t old enough to drive yet (funny story).

Our high-school graduation

After graduation we each decided on the University of Colorado as our school, however I went to the Denver campus while she went to the Boulder campus. Despite being only an hour drive away, our lives were so hectic that we didn’t see each other. When she would be in town I’d be gone and when I’d be in the Boulder area she’d be out of town and so on.

However, even though we didn’t see each other for four years, we never lost touch and when we saw each other today it was just back to the old days. Sitting around drinking tea, and talking.

Our college graduation

Long story short, real and true friends never forget, and even after literally years of not seeing each other can pick up exactly where they left off.

Love you Diter! <3 Can’t believe we’re done with another chapter of schooling.

A weight loss challenge

One of my favorite bloggers (Meghan) is participating in a weight loss challenge presented by Mr.&Mrs. Smith, so I am going to link up with these girls and play along. Since my 25 Days of Fitness are hopefully leading me to a weight loss, I’d like to keep it up through the 8 weeks and see if I will be able to get to my goal weight.

Weight Loss Challenge

I am technically in the weight range for my height, however I’ve gained about 20 pounds of marital bliss weight, which I’d like to get rid of so that I can fit back into my jeans and dress pants.

I am 5’7’’
I weigh somewhere around 146 pounds
I’d like to be at about a 125-130
My goal is to lose about 15 to 20 pounds

I would be very happy with just 15 pounds so I’m setting my goal at this for the next 8 weeks, however it would be fantastic if I could lose 20. However, I am also taking into consideration that building muscle is going to cause a weight gain, since muscle weighs more then fat. However, my true measure of my weight loss will be if I can fit into my jeans, the ones that use to fit me like a glove which I have to fight and wiggle to get into now.
Smile
Here is my plan:

Exercise-wise I plan on continuing with my 25 Days of Fitness challenge, running Couch to 5K, taking Body Pump classes at the gym 3 days a week, and lifting weights in-between. Monday, Wednesday and Sunday are my Body Pump classes, before class I usually spend about 30 minutes working on my legs. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays I run, work on abs and throw in some other upper body workouts. These past two days my knee has been bugging me so instead of running on the treadmill I’ve trades up and have been using the elliptical (much softer on the knees).

Diet-wise I plan on using more supplements (you can read all about them here, and here). I am also using myfitnesspal.com, to track my exercise and calories. I am going to try and stick to a 1200 calorie diet. This is the first time in my life that I am counting calories, so wish me luck.

I will be weighing in on Wednesday nights.

Sorry this is a day late guys!

I’m very excited to have a goal set and have people motivating me to move towards it.

Hello! Summer vacations and new bikinis! Woohoo!

Good luck all!

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”

I feel that Wayne Gretzky’s quote is true both in the sport world as well as in everyday life. If we don’t risk and try and take the shots we’ll never know if we would have made them.

Welcome to Day 3 of 25 Days of Fitness

As we go through the next couple of days my post will really focus on four elements of being healthy and leading a healthy lifestyle. They are nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and stress handling. These are the four basic and key parts of what really leads to a healthy, satisfying and less stressful life.

image

As someone who is getting back into a fitness world after over 5 years of sitting on the couch, I can say that I’ve seem to have forgotten a lot of different tricks, especially when it comes to nutrition. Junk food, such as potato chips and soda might give you a temporary sugar high and a bit of energy, but they wear off just as fast as they come. On Monday, I got super lightheaded and dizzy during Body Pump, and I know it’s because I went to the gym on an empty stomach… My tennis coach use to always make us eat granola bars before practice and matches, and being my ditzy self, I completely forgot how important it is to always eat before exercising.

Hence, for today’s 25 Days of Fitness post, I want to talk about 5 Nutritional Tips that every individual who is trying to get fit should pay attention to.

1. Never, ever, ever exercise on an empty stomach

Would you try to drive your car without gas? This is pretty much the same concept, do not workout without putting some fuel in your tank. Much like a car, your body needs energy to be able to keep going. Don’t make my mistake! Trust me getting dizzy while lifting weights is not how you want to feel.

So about an hour before a workout, fuel your body with some easily digested carbs. A few great pre-workout snacks are: Banana, yogurt, whole grain toast with peanut butter. A CLIFF bar or some other protein bar is also a good idea.

For workouts that will last longer then 90 minutes you want to eat a small, well balanced meal. Here is an example: A sliced banana and peanut butter on whole grain crackers.

2. Pay Attention to your pee

The more you workout and the more you sweat, the more you increase your risk of dehydration. Even if you are slightly dehydrated your exercise can seem a great deal harder. And the best indication of dehydration is your urine color.

Urine should be a pale yellow color without a strong odor. The goals are to start exercise with pale colored urine and to produce pale urine within an hour of finishing your workout.

So if you notice that your urine is a dark color after the workout, you need to drink more water. If you had to run to the bathroom several times during your workout, you need to drink less water. Simple enough?

3. Snack on something after a workout

While you are exercising, your body is burning carbohydrates. On average you will need about 55 grams of carbs per hour of exercise. Make sure to replenish your supply of carbs, because when you run out of the carbs you will be mentally and physically exhausted and done for the day. A banana is a great source of carbs, hence you can eat one of those, or try some pretzels, and even sports drinks like Gatorade.

4. Salts are important too!

When your body sweats you lose a certain amount of salt.. you know why sweat tastes salty? Yup, you got it, because that’s what it is. You are sweating sodium out! Replenishing your sodium supplies is just as important as replenishing your carbs. How will you know if you are losing too much sodium you ask? Well, if you develop headaches, nausea, muscle cramps or disorientation during your workout then you are low on sodium.

I know I lose a great deal of sodium when working out, and my secret is drinking lots of Gatorade. Gatorade is pretty much colored sweat. It was created as a sports drink for the Florida Gator’s and the idea was to put the electrolytes that the players lost during their workouts back into their body. Hence, drink more water and eat more salt.

5. Don’t abuse your body… respect it

After exercising, don’t just go take a nap or eat a doughnut! Instead, reward it with a balanced meal and drink plenty of water.

After a workout, your body is trying to get back into the norm by repairing fatigued muscles, rehydrating and storing up carbohydrates. So try and help it out in this process. The best way to reward your body for all of its hard work is to eat unprocessed and colorful foods. Here are some examples of a balanced recovery meals:

  • 100 percent whole grain toast spread with ricotta cheese, sprinkled with ground ginger and cinnamon and topped with sliced pear or berries
  • 100 percent whole wheat pita stuffed with chicken or salmon salad (mix curry powder, grapes, raisins and pecans into salad)
  • Spaghetti squash or 100 percent whole grain pasta with marinara sauce and low fat chicken sausage and spinach salad
  • Smoothie with yogurt, tart cherry juice, banana, blueberries and almond butter
  • Baked yam or sweet potato stuffed with sautéed spinach and chicken
  • Scrambled eggs with a tortilla, black beans, salsa and fruit salad

So there you have it! Easy enough to do, so get to it!

I’m off to work and then to the gym for Body Pump!

Runner’s high

… I’m still waiting to get to the point where I get a runner’s high and can keep running. Last night, I repeated Week 2 Day 1 of Couch to 5K, since I missed my week three due to studying for an exam that turned out to be pointless anyways.

image

With a warm up and a cool down it was a total of 30 minutes on the treadmill. After this I did about 20 minutes of abdominal work, which wasn’t really enough because I can’t really feel it today. I also spent another 2 minutes jump-roping and 8 minutes stretching. I’m really thinking of adding some Yoga into my workout plan. The P90X Yoga was pretty awesome but super hard. Any suggestions for a good beginner yoga class or workout?

I also drank a ton of water! I think I was being a bit of a water hog.

That’s all for my update from Day 2, keep your eyes peeled for a Wednesday Wants (see previous issues here and here) and a Day 3 of 25 Days of Fitness (Day 1, and Day 2).

Introducing 25 Days of Fitness

For the past week, I have put all extra activities on hold to study up on Chemistry and the exam coming up on Monday. From Monday to today I’ve really felt a lacking in energy, inability to gain a good nights sleep and constantly feeling tired. Not only that, but my skin has gone bezzerk on me, and started breaking out like mad. Granted I break out when I am stressed, but not to the level of breakouts that I am having right now, so I am contributing all the negatives to my lack of working out.

In order to keep myself motivated I’d like to introduce you to my 25 Days of Fitness Challenge! But first let me tell ya about this new deliciousness that I have discovered!

Say hello to my little friend FAGE!! It is the king of all Greek Yogurts, and I love it plain, with home made cottage cheese, with fruits, on crackers and any other way that you can think of eating yogurt. It reminds me of my grandmothers homemade strained yogurt, and it is AH-mazing!

Breakfast Fage

This was my breakfast. Two tablespoons of Fage plain 2% yogurt, with 3 fresh strawberries, and a 1/4 cup of Udi’s Hawaiian flavored granola. It was so good! I use to make this with just regular yogurt, and it was good, but no where near as good!

Lunch 2      Lunch close up

I couldn’t help myself, and for lunch I had some more of Fage! This time I made a plate with some Honey Oat granola bites, grapes, and a mix of home made cottage cheese and Greek yogurt. It was unbelievably good!

Bottom line, if you have been on the hunt for a new Greek Yogurt, tries this one. I’ve tried several other brands, and none of them have compared to this! YUM!

 25 Day Fitness Challenge!

I am challenging myself and anyone else who’d like to play along, to go 25 straight days with at least 30 minutes of some kind of an exercise! Studies conducted by the American Heart Association show the following:
Even moderately intense physical activity such as brisk walking is beneficial when done regularly for a total of 30 minutes or longer on most or all days.
The benefits of regular exercise are crucial to good health. My grandfather was recently diagnosed with lung cancer and underwent a surgery that removed the lower lobe of his left lung. He survived the surgery, and is back at home after only 6 days in the hospital due to his excellent health, which shows when he rides his bike for 80 miles at the age of 78. The American Heart Association states the following regarding regular exercise:
Regular aerobic physical activity increases your fitness level and capacity for exercise. It also plays a role in both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease. Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke and is linked to cardiovascular mortality.
Regular physical activity can help control blood lipid abnormalities, diabetes and obesity. Aerobic physical activity can also help reduce blood pressure.
The results of pooled studies show that people who modify their behavior and start regular physical activity after heart attack have better rates of survival and better quality of life. Healthy people — as well as many patients with cardiovascular disease — can improve their fitness and exercise performance with training.
So whether its getting up and going out for a walk, running, jogging, lifting weights, or taking a class such as Body Pump or an at home program like P90X, I encourage you to do at least 30 minutes of it, for 25 days and let me know how you feel afterwards.

Smile

25 days of fitness 2

I’ll be starting my challenge on Monday, right after I am done with my Chemistry Test! I’ll have a badge to grab up sometime before Monday!

A month of goals

I can't change the direction of the wind, but I can adjust my sails to always reach my destination.”   -- Jimmy Dean
Every birthday, I make a list of resolutions and usually never follow through on getting them done. This years list has 22 items that I am pretty set on getting done, even though a few of them need to be modified and extended into the next year.

1. Fit into my jeans!

2. Get healthy and stay healthy

3. Get a gym membership and go at least 3 times a week (I got a membership to the 24 Hour Fitness right down the street, and have been good about going regularly thus far, but I am not crossing off the goal of going 3 times a week, because it should be continuous.)

4. Apply to grad school – this is one that needs to be modified, since we are back on the initial plan to move to Texas, this will have to wait until I am graduated as well as until we know where we will be living.

5. Find a job in my field

6. Keep up with daily posts on the blog (I’ve been pretty good about this, and hope to keep it up)

7. Dive the Keys in Florida

8. Read a book a week – modifying to Read at least 2 books a month

9. Do Kendi's 30 for 30 for at least one month every season! – This will start in May!!

10. Start a graduate program – this one is dependent on #4… applying would be first!

11. Buy a house – we will not be buying a house this year, since we don’t know where we will be living

12. Pay off all bad debt!!!!

13. Become a better Photographer

14. Vacation to the Bahamas

15. Send my parents on a vacation

16. Keep my nails painted for the whole year, and avoid acrylics (I’ve been really good about this too, I let the polish chip a bit before replacing but my nails have been painted every day since my birthday!)

17. Paint more

18. Spend more time with Grandpa

19. Learn how to sew

20. Keep a journal

21. Get at least one ski trip in (Feb 25-27 Keystone, CO)

22. Sort photos and finish scrapbooks!!!

In order to get things done, I am stealing Meghan’s idea of mini-goals. I really like the idea of setting small stepping stones towards bigger goals.

I’d like to have 5 to 10 mini-goals a month that I can try and accomplish, so here is my list of goals for the Month of April!

1. Get 8 hours of solid sleep every night – sleeping and resting is so crucial to a productive and happy day, I know when I don’t get enough sleep I am the biggest grump in the world. Hence sleeping enough will be my number one goal this month!

2. Exercise daily, with at least 3 days at the gym, C25K and Body Pump – exercise gives you endorphins (feel good hormones) which result in a better mood, better sleep, more productivity and overall happiness! Plus getting a better body while you’re at it is a plus, with Summer right around the corner and tropical vacations in the making!

River Maya 2008
I want this body back! In 2008, I was at my healthiest form!

3. Write more, not just blog wise but in general – I love writing and am pretty set on making some extra money out of it, even if I don’t make anything the writing process in itself is a favorite hobby of mine and I would like to really expend on it, and develop my skills.

4. Plan meals and cook at home (at least 3 in a week) – I love cooking, and I recently rediscovered how much fun I have while cooking. Cooking is a great way to relax and de-stress for me, so I plan on doing more of it.

IMG_6321

5. Cut out soda and junk food – no fast food, and keep going out to eat to once a week or less. – Eating fast food makes me feel gross, literally. My face feels greasy, my body starts feeling tired and unhealthy and its just bad in general. Hence, this month will be a complete cut of fast food!

6. Read at least 2 books – I love reading. It’s a whole different world. I feel that I don’t read enough, so this year, I am going to try and read more!

7. Organize my closet – even though I just got rid of a ton of clothing, I still feel that there is more to go. This could be due to the tiny closet I’ve had to fit everything into, or the fact that now that I live in a pair of jeans and a hoodie I’ve lost my connection with my clothing, and in order to re-spark it I need to go through my belongings!

IMG_5814

This is only a section of what my closet use to look like. I had two very large walk-in closets, plus a smaller walk in one. Now its only a tiny sliding door, non-walk in Sad smile

It will be a big step for me to get these things done and I am looking forward to accomplishing them!
Hope y’all are having an awesome Thursday! It’s almost the weekend, and time for my Mister to get home!

I hate it… but I love it

… Sore muscles and all.

After run snack

After doing my 1st run of the 2nd week of the C25K I decided it was time to work on the pudg that is building around my waistline. So, I went back to my favorite at home workout program, P90X.

I am just going to be doing the Ab Ripper X (click here for a outline). I really do have a love/hate relationship with this. It is about 15 minutes, but feels like it lasts forever, 25 reps of everything. While your core starts screaming, the results are fantastic! I love Ab Ripper X!!!

Disclaimer: I was not paid or compensated in any way to talk about P90X or any other workout program. This is my personal experience and review of what I use to get my body in shape.

Q: What are some at home workouts that you do? Have you tried P90X, if so what do you think of it?

Wednesday Wants

It’s already Wednesday and what a week its been! Today, especially when I realized that I might have just wasted the last 2.5 years taking biology classes, when I could be halfway done with my masters, but more on this later. Right now I want to share last nights productivity with y’all.

After getting done with tutoring at 4, I headed over to King Soopers (our resident grocery store) to pick up some ground beef, cheese and tortillas! As I was rummaging through my purse to find my credit card, I came across an expired Kohl’s Cash Sad smile. With the thought that I just lost the $30.00 on the Kohl’s cash, I started walking to the car, only to remember that there is a giant Kohl’s store next door. So I dropped off the groceries and ran inside, just to see if I could redeem my very expired coupon.

Well guess what?!!! Kohl’s is awesome, at least this one was! They redeemed the $30.00 and gave me an additional 30% off!

                                imageimage

So I ended up getting the above little number for free, plus a scarf and a new belt! I say that’s a pretty big WIN!!!!

I got home and did my 3rd run of my Couch to 5K. Which felt fantastic, after a week. I have three more to go this week. Then it was time to make some dinner.
Taco bar
I made a taco bar, which is my all-time favorite dinner to go to. I just cook up a pound of ground beef with some of my favorite taco seasoning, cut up fresh tomatoes, red onions, lettuce, get some grated Mexican cheese and you are pretty much ready to go.
Sometimes I get really fancy and actually make some pico, and cut up more toppings for the tacos. However, I was pretty exhausted last night, so we made do with lazy tacos!
Tacos for Dinner
They were delicious!
__________________________________________________________________________________
On to the Wednesday Wants, and my sob story!
1. Graduation!!!

I want to graduate already.

*Sob Story* – as I was sitting in my awful chemistry class today, I realized that I have a very slim chance of passing the stupid thing, which happens to be the only obstacle between me and my Bachelor of Science in Psychology. (Please do not ask WHY in this world I chose a BS degree… because there is no way I could give you an answer that makes sense). Anywho, I got up and left with another half an hour left to go, and headed upstairs straight to my advisor who was in the middle of losing her mind. NOW, I’ve got seven different appointments set with all kinds of advisors and department heads and teachers to see what we can do to switch my degree from a BS to a BA and have me graduate in the Spring.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, keep your fingers crossed for me that the advisor for the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology will wave the one class (History of Psychology) so that I can graduate on time.

2. Harry Potter Hardcover set

Now my inner nerd is coming out! I love reading, and Harry Potter was one of the first books I read. My absolute favorite is Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban!!! While I have all the book, some in paperback and some in hardcover, this set would be perfect to put on a shelf … minus the box, it’s kind of ugly!

3. Bright Colored Bars

I am drooling over the new bright colored lacy bras that I’ve seen around! I am also pretty obsessed with sheer top and bright bra combos! I think they look hot! Winking smile.

4. A trip to my beautiful Armenia

Even though I was born in Russia, and lived all over the world, my heart belongs in the beautiful Armenia. The small Christian nation surrounded by the Muslim Middle Eastern countries, has so much culture, tradition and history to offer that you could get lost in it for years. I am an Armenian at heart and always will be. I’m hoping to visit over this coming summer to see my family, especially my aging grandmother.

5. A resolution to the awful disaster and nuclear problem in Japan

This is the worst natural disaster our world has seen in 2011, and hopefully the last. My thoughts are with those who are suffering, who have lost not only their homes but their families and friends. I hope that as a world we can come together to help these people get back on their feet and of course resolve the problem of the nuclear reactor that is threatening to blow at any moment.
__________________________________________________________________________________
So that’s all FOLKS!!!
Q: What are your Wednesday wants?
